Soaking music is for dwelling places. Music that is inspired of the Holy Spirit helps us to connect with God in the secret place. From the beginning God’s had created man to walk in intimate communion with Him. Adam had walked in the garden with God where all the clothing he had was the glory of God’s Presence. In the same way God wants us to be clothed with His Presence. Not only clothed, but now inhabited. Jesus came to not only restore what Adam had lost but to bring us into an even greater and closer communion with God through the blood of His cross. Here are a few keys of understanding to help unlock to us what is foundational to our lives to flourish in God’s Presence:
1. Simplicity of Devotion
What a contrast! The complexity of religion verses the simplicity of devotion. With religion we find many “hoops”, many laws and rules, many “things to do”, but this is not the case in Christ. Jesus came to show us how to live from the inside out. While religious ways teach us all the externals, Jesus comes to reveal to us the “internals”. What is important is what comes out of the heart, not what goes into the stomach. Paul exhorts us to not be swayed from the “simplicity of devotion” that is found only in Jesus.
2 Corinthians 11:3
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
We see this illustrated in the contrast of lives with Martha and Mary. Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus “hearing His words” while Martha was busy about much serving. Martha was attending to the externals, while Mary was attending to the things that would not be taken away from her.
Here we see a pure life of devotion where our greatest humility is developed. Martha was pointing the finger at Mary, while Mary was quite content at the feet of Jesus. Simplicity of Devotion is foundational to our lives being fruitful in Christ.
2. Worshippers
God is looking for worshippers. In scripture, we really don’t find too many things that He is looking
for. We know the eyes of the Lord search throughout the earth to find those whose hearts are toward Him. Jesus shows us clearly that God is looking for those who worship Him with a pure heart.
John 4:23-24
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
I know that many like to say that everything we do is worship to the Lord, I would agree. I would also point to the life of David, of Moses and of all others that wrote the Psalms. Because here we find more than just actions, we hear their voices worshipping the Lord. They are not ashamed to lift up their voices to God in abandon. This is a mark of true men and women of God. It is not to be a display for men but an expression that comes out of the secret place that His people have with Him. Paul, who many would not think of as a demonstrative worshipper but rather a biblical scholar and apostle, told us to sing to “each other” with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sometimes out 21st century modern day perspectives can give us a more religious view of the authors of scripture that what is actually true.
There is a transaction that occurs when we worship with our voice. God inhabits our praise. God dwells in the praises of His people. Worship is a key to becoming a dwelling place of God. The Holy Spirit is drawn to those who worship. When we come together corporately worshipping the Lord in unison God comes with His Presence in more significant ways.
3. Springs of the Holy Spirit
As dwelling places of His Spirit, God wants us to overflow with His Presence. Jesus told us that from our inmost part would spring up rivers of living water.
John 7:38
“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
In other words, God wants to fill us with His life and substance to pour out on others. Just as Jesus spoke with the woman at the well. As He told her of the things of her own life suddenly she was awakened to the reality of who Jesus was. Things were being awakened inside of her. When God awakens us, we some alive to the things of His Presence.
Soaking Music helps us to tap into the riches of His Presence within us. Jesus has made us sons, inheritors of the promise of the Father – the Holy Spirit.
